Fundamentals of Project Management

Why study Fundamentals of Project Management?

Project management has cemented its position as a key management paradigm, enabling organisations across the globe to efficiently and effectively reach their goals in a constantly changing business environment complicated by risks, uncertainties, competitor pressures and the global economy. No matter where in a professional environment, professionals will be involved in a project to some degree, making this short learning programme very beneficial in life and for several professional roles.

The purpose of this programme is to introduce learners to the knowledge, tools and techniques needed to manage projects successfully throughout a project life cycle and to the language used by practitioners in conjunction with the terminology recognised by the Project Management Institute (PMI). Participants to this programme will explore the project management knowledge areas and process groups of the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) guide. Learners will also examine the ways these two dimensions of project management interact in initiating (scoping), planning, executing (launching), monitoring and controlling and closing a project.

After completion of this short learning programme you will be able to:

  • Determine the purpose and explain the processes and fundamentals of project management
  • Identify and critically evaluate the project life cycle and reflect on the various constraints that affect this life cycle
  • Evaluate and explain the project manager’s three constraint problems and apply project management tools  to find solutions to these problems
  • Describe the personal capabilities required for managing global projects
  • Apply the management principles of planning, organising, monitoring, controlling and coordinating resources in the project planning and management context, reflecting on the financial implications
  • Conduct specialised scholastic, professional, technical and advanced research in project management, including gathering, analysing and interpreting related information using the appropriate management technology
  • Compare traditional and alternative project management approaches
  • Communicate effectively in writing and/or orally to demonstrate an ability to critically review, consolidate and extend a systematic and coherent body of knowledge with respect to elements of project management
  • Analyse the project manager’s role, reflecting upon the skills and capabilities required by those involved
  • Identify learning strategies to acquire and/or improve the skills of project managers
