Excel for Internal Auditors

Why study Excel for Internal Auditors?

According to the Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing of the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), internal auditors must exercise due professional care by considering the:

  • Extent of work needed to achieve the engagement’s objectives
  • Relative complexity, materiality or significance of matters to which assurance procedures are applied
  • Adequacy and effectiveness of governance, risk management and control processes
  • Probability of significant errors, fraud or noncompliance
  • Cost of assurance in relation to potential benefits

In exercising due professional care, internal auditors must consider the use of technology-based audits and other data analysis techniques. Microsoft Excel is a useful solution to apply as a Computer Assisted Auditing Tool and has the ability to assist the internal auditor in performing effective and efficient audit procedures on large amounts of data and audit evidence.
