Coming to Grips with Corporate Governance

Why study Coming to Grips with Corporate Governance?

Corporate Governance is arguably the most significant development of our times. It is commonly regarded as having significance to listed companies only. In fact, the South African Code of Corporate Governance (King IV) applies to all sectors including State Owned Companies and the Public Sector inter alia. Corporate Governance (and its components such as Ethics, Strategy, Leadership, Risk, etc.) is developing globally at an exponential rate.

It is necessary to understand the origins of Corporate Governance to fully appreciate its value and significance, notably Corporate Social Responsibility and Integrated Reporting. Anyone involved in management, in its broadest sense, should have a thorough understanding and appreciation of Corporate Governance, and the future thereof. It can only bring significant benefits to any entity in the uncertain times currently being faced.

After completion of this short learning programme you will be able to:

  • Understand and appreciate the origins of Corporate Governance
  • Contextualise the importance of Corporate Governance for society as a whole, leading into the future
  • Exhibit enhanced skills in short term, medium term and long term strategic planning
  • Carry out all aspects of the entity’s affairs in an exemplary and ethical manner
  • Display a corporate social responsibility consciousness for the benefit of the disadvantaged
  • Appreciate the need for the entity (and environment) to be sustainable, and the manner of achieving such sustainability
  • Conduct a thorough risk analysis, taking into account the entity’s stakeholders
  • Provide guidance to all staff in integrated thinking, integrated reporting and using the integrated report as a planning and implementing tool
  • Appreciate the benefit of integrated reporting for users of the entity’s reporting, including the advantages over conventional annual financial statements
  • Display improved leadership skills and understand the benefit of leadership teams
  • Have an insight into the numerous laws and regulation with which the entity must comply
  • Appreciate the need for a combined assurance model, and understand the implementation thereof
