Why study Bachelor of Commerce in Law while you work?

The IIE Bachelor of Commerce in Law (BCom (Law)) degree is offered at IIE MSA with classes on weekends. This convenient study option gives you the opportunity to balance your studies with your work and personal life.

There are four terms during which you can take two modules per term. This means that you can still complete your degree in three years.

The classes are offered every second Saturday, through a blended learning model and are supported by weekly online contact sessions during evenings.

There is a growing need for multi-dimensional graduates with the ability to participate in an increasingly complex and dynamic local and global economy. The dual focus on commerce and law allows graduates to pursue a career in business management, whilst the focus on governance and compliance ensures ethical business practices will be followed. Armed with a firm grasp of sound business skills, graduates who want to pursue a career in law, can complete a further law qualification.

This qualification aims to equip learners with a well-rounded, broad education to produce graduates equipped with the knowledge base, theory and methodology of commerce and the general rules of law. Graduates will be familiar with the relationship between various aspects of commerce and the general rules of law.

Graduates of this qualification will also hold in high regard their duty to contribute meaningfully to the development of the local and global society and economy.

Fees for 2019

Fees are subject to change annually.

R65,000 per annum

You can pay per unit or per term.

Domestic/South African students are advise to pay 30% of their semester fee before enrolment and the balance by the published payment due date. Alternative payment arrangement can be applied for to pay each unit in full before the commencement date of the unit.

Payment dates are earlier if you are a commencing international student. This is to allow 6-8 weeks for your study visa applications to be processed prior to enrolment. To avoid delays obtaining a study visa, commencing international students must pay a 30% deposit before enrolling to allow 6-8 weeks for study visa applications and 50% balance on or before enrolment.

The IIE BCom (Law)degree will equip the learner with specialised knowledge in certain law subjects, whilst the commerce subjects will allow the learner the ability to develop a specialisation in tax, accounting or governance and compliance.

This qualification will also impart general skills and competencies in numeracy, literacy and articulation. The qualification is an ideal first degree grounding for a variety of careers in law, business and government. It furthermore enables graduates to articulate to the two year advanced IIE BCom (Law) offered at IIE MSA, leading to a deeper understanding of the nature and function of, and an ability to apply the law, in the regulation of commercial activity. Successful completion of this programme leads to an IIE qualification.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the IIE BCom (Law) will be able to enter into a variety of careers in law and business, be it in the private or public sector. Alternatively, graduates may also continue to an advanced law qualification and ultimately follow a career in law, whilst armed with a firm grasp of sound business skills or become entrepreneurs by starting their own businesses.

  • Minimum score: 31
  • Subject prerequisites: English Home Language (4); Mathematics (4) or Mathematical Literacy (75% or higher)

Advanced Levels
  • Minimum score: 7
  • Subject prerequisites: English and Math pass

Notes: Score A Levels grades as follows: A=5, B= 4, C=3, D=2, E=1. Score AS Level grades as follows: A=2.5, B=2, C=1.5, D=1, E=0.5

Examinations taken in maximum of 1 academic year.

International Baccalaureate Diploma
  • Minimum score: 25
  • Subject prerequisites: English 4 (SL) or 3 (HL) and Math pass
Namibia HIGSCE
  • Maximum score: 18
  • Subject prerequisites: English and Math pass

Notes: Total score of six higher level subjects taken in one examination sitting*. Score higher level grades as follows: 1 (ONE), 2 (Two), 3 (THREE) and 4(FOUR), 0 (UNGRADED). Note: Grade 1 (ONE) is the highest and Grade 4 (FOUR) the lowest. Minimum English language requirement met by a maximum result of 2 in First Language English (Higher Level).

*A minimum of 6 subjects are taken in one examination sitting.

SAT
  • Minimum score:
    • 1710 prior to March 2016 (Total score out of 2400)
    • 1210 from March 2016 (Total score out of 1600)
  • Subject prerequisites: English and Math pass

Notes: High School Diploma (Grade 12) AND combined SAT scores of Critical Reading, Mathematics and Writing.
