Dr Tshepo Mongalo

Head of Department: Law

Professor Mongalo is the Head of the Department of Law and a Senior Academic at Monash South Africa. He was recently appointed as Chair of the Legal Entities Doctrinal Study Group of the International Association of Law Schools (IALS), having acted as Chair representative in that organisation for two years prior to that. He was the Associate Professor of Law within the School of Law at the University of the Witwatersrand from 2013 – 2017. He is also serving as a member and Deputy Chairperson of the Specialist Committee on Company Law in South Africa (SCCL) and is the former Corporate Law Consultant for the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission in South Africa (CIPC). He is also the former Associate Professor of Corporate Law and Corporate Governance at the University of Cape Town and the former Director of the Business Registration Reform Project within the South African Revenue Service (SARS).

Professor Mongalo received a B.Proc (Summa cum Laude) and an LLB from the University of Natal in Durban; an LLM from Cambridge University in England, where he was the Deputy President of the Cambridge University Southern African Students’ Union (CUSAS). He is also the recipient of a PhD in Commercial Law from the University of Cape Town.

Professor Mongalo has authored and edited a number of books and scholarly articles in the area of corporate law and corporate governance, competition law and corporate social responsibility. He has been a Visiting Scholar of the University of Nottingham, Cambridge University, Brown University, Harvard University and Indiana University.
