Students can only engage in practice from the second year. First year practicums are utilised as orientation for placement skills required in further years of the programme.  The second practicum focuses on the induction of the student to the stressors related to care-giving.


  • Describe the nature and impact of vicarious trauma.
  • Explain the nature and impact of transference and counter transference.
  • Reflect on the effects of care-giver burn-out.

Workload requirements

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this module is 50 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. The module requires on average one/two hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
