The IIE Postgraduate Diploma in Business Leadership (PGD BL) is a management development programme aimed at all managerial levels showing potential with the fundamental skills and knowledge necessary for successful general business management and effective leadership. During the degree the emphasis will evolve from an operational to a more strategic perspective of leadership in a business context.

6 Compulsory Modules

Managing Business Information and Knowledge  (20 credits)
In this module students will explore on the links between data, information and knowledge. Students will study the tools and techniques that are essential for creating knowledge assets and creating business value. In this module special attention will be paid to the role of big data, ownership of data and data information and knowledge. n this module we will explore and consider definitions and aspects of data, information and knowledge as strategic resources of the business. Attention will be given to the business elements of process, people and technology.

Contemporary Management Principles and Practices(20 credits)
The purpose of this module is to develop a thorough understanding and knowledge of the skills and competencies necessary for managing an organisation effectively, and for responding positively to the challenges that organisations and employees face in the ever-changing business and economic environment.

Programme Introduction Dates

The programme has compulsory Programme Introduction sessions. Students will be notified of the Programme Introduction dates.

Each module runs for ten (10) weeks and begins with a scheduled contact session on campus followed by further continuous study and assignment submissions via the Learning Management System (LMS). Contact sessions are offered every second Saturday from 9h00 to 13h00, through a blended learning model and are supported by weekly online contact sessions during evenings.

Applied Accounting and Finance for Managers (20 credits)
TThe purpose of this module is to develop students’ understanding of the concepts and application of accounting and finance in decision-making processes within an organisation.

Human Resource Management (20 credits)
This module provides students with a sound understanding of the application of the theory and practice of human resource management within the contemporary business environment. The module further aims to expose students to the management of competing demands of ensuring international coherence in, and cost-effective approach to, the way multinational organisations manage their people in all the countries it covers, while ensuring that it can be responsive to the differences in assumption about what works from one location to another.

Strategic Management and Leadership (20 credits)
The purpose of this module is to provide students with in-depth knowledge and understanding of leadership and the role of strategic management within the business environment, in a national and international context.

Research methodology (20 credits)
The purpose of this module is to develop students’ skills in research, critical analysis, and academic discourse in order for them to complete a self-directed research project. Emphasis is placed on independent and critical thinking, analysis, research designs and methods, as well as academic discourse. This module will provide students with practical and applied experience in research.

Learning outcomes

  • Explain the critical importance of, and the interplay between, leadership-related concepts in the private, public and not for profit sectors.
  • Critically analyse the roles and responsibilities of business leaders within changing economic, social, legal, ethical and political contexts.
  • Develop a strategy and implementation plan to address complex management and leadership challenges.
  • Examine the role of analytical, intellectual, and ICT tools in assessing business opportunities and implementing appropriate business leadership strategies and tactics.
  • Discuss ways to nurture leadership and managerial talent to lead organisations to high impact and global reach.
  • Reflect on personal performance and planning and apply interpersonal, group-working, and leadership skills to enhance your performance and the performance of others.

Mode of Delivery
The Postgraduate Diploma in Business Leadership uses flexible teaching methods as it is designed for the working professional. A combined model is used which  -includes face-to-face contact sessions, extensive online learning using the virtual learning system, case studies and projects to apply learning into practice and various assignments.

Assessments
Modes of assessment will include class participation, face-to-face and online discussion, completion of case studies, assignment and projects. In order to pass, the final mark must be a passing mark of 50% or more.

IIE MSA campus in Ruimsig, Johannesburg (Important Notice: This is not a distance programme, students must be able to attend face-to-face contact sessions in each module).

Minimum Admission Requirements
An appropriate HEQSF Level 7 Bachelor’s degree; OR An appropriate Advanced Diploma; OR An equivalent NQF Level 7 qualification

International Students
A SAQA Evaluation Certificate with NQF L7 equivalence in an appropriate field.

Award
The Postgraduate Diploma in Business Leadership; HEQSF level 8 - the same level as an honours degree. The diploma is awarded by The IIE.
